About MindSearch

MindSearch is a full-service marketing research consulting firm founded in 1991. We are located in Tewksbury, MA and managed by the wife and husband team of Julie Shaylor and Scott Hunter. Unlike other firms that offer either quantitative or qualitative services, we can execute either methodology -- and often a blend of both --that you require to answer your business questions.

Meet Julie

Work Experience -- Julie Shaylor is the founder of MindSearch, a marketing research consulting firm started in 1991.   Julie’s past work experience includes service as Marketing Research Director for a major direct mail marketer, as Market Research Manager for a Fortune 500 industrial supplies manufacturer, and as Product Manager for an international marketer of industrial products.

Education -- Julie earned her MBA with a concentration in Quantitative Research Methods from the University of Massachusetts.  Prior to obtaining her MBA, Julie attended Colby College and earned a BA degree in Economics.  She has continued to keep up-to-date with new research methodologies by doing post-graduate study at Carnegie Mellon, Boston University, Bentley College, and attending numerous marketing research seminars sponsored by the Burke Institute, the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Marketing Research Association (MRA), and the Qualitative Research Consultants Association (QRCA).

Consulting -- Julie’s consulting expertise ranges from qualitative work yielding directional insight and new ideas to quantitative analysis involving surveys, modeling, respondent clustering, and trade-off analysis.  These techniques have been used by business-to-consumer clients such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Comcast, Chadwick’s of Boston, LL Bean, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Vermont Country Store, Home Depot, and Better Homes & Gardens.  She has also worked with medical and pharmaceutical firms such as Johnson & Johnson, KCI, Pri-Med and MC Communications interviewing physicians and patients.  Her business-to-business clients include Staples, Fed-Ex Kinko's, IBM, Sprint, Deluxe, Intuit, and AGFA, and higher education organizations such as Harvard Business School and the Simon School (University of Rochester).  Julie brings a unique perspective to marketing research consulting having spent over fifteen years on the client side of the business.  She knows from personal experience what clients need in terms of assistance and communication.  She will adeptly develop a research plan to address clients’ questions that incorporate appropriate qualitative and/or quantitative techniques.

Meet Scott

Work Experience Scott Hunter is a co-founder of MindSearch.   His prior work experience includes a variety of marketing communications, marketing research and competitive analysis roles for firms ranging from multinational industrial equipment suppliers to venture-financed technology developers.

Education -- Scott earned his MBA with a concentration in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts.  Prior to obtaining an MBA, Scott also earned a MA in International Affairs from George Washington University.  In addition, Scott has a BA in Political Science from the University of Massachusetts.  Honors include graduating Magna Cum Laude and election to the Phi Beta Kappa society.

Consulting Scott provides an excellent complement to Julie’s heavy quantitative analysis skills.  In Scott’s prior roles writing website content, managing email marketing campaigns, organizing technology-intensive trade shows on four continents and much more he has developed a keen sense for “what works” in the real world.  Scott contributes to each research report using a simple and direct writing style that answers the key objectives and makes recommendations which are easy to understand and (hopefully) reasonable to implement.  His years of experience managing large scale projects and coordinating vendors insures each research project occurs on time and on budget.
